Delta State Launches Renewable Energy Policy Roadmap with Clean Technology Hub and Heinrich Böll Foundation
22nd August 2022, Abuja, Nigeria — Clean Technology Hub, with the generous support of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Foundation, formally launched the Delta State Renewable Energy Roadmap (2023–2028) at Springhill Hotels, Asaba, Delta State on the 16th of August, 2022. The launch of the policy roadmap was a culmination of several interactions with the key stakeholders across Delta State, as the document had passed through several consultations with a variety of private sector, civil society and government stakeholders.
The purpose of the event was to launch and officially hand over the policy roadmap to the Delta State Ministry of Energy, with the goal of domiciliation and eventual adoption by the Delta State Government. The policy document will complement the social and economic development aspirations of the State as part of the Delta State Medium-Term Development Plan (DSMTDP) (2020–2023) and subsequent plans. The event consisted of goodwill messages/remarks by special guests, a presentation on the roadmap, a presentation by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), a panel discussion on the “Role of States in Driving Nigeria’s Energy Transition”, and the ceremonial handover of the roadmap document to the Permanent Secretary of the Delta State Ministry of Energy.
The event began with Mr Daramfon Bassey, Manager of Energy Access at Clean Technology Hub welcoming guests and providing a background on the Driving Renewable Energy Adoption at State Level project and the objective of the event. A presentation followed this by the Country Director of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Mr Jochen Luckscheiter who gave a background on the Foundation and the reason for supporting the project in Delta State remarking that “An ambitious roll-out of renewable energy could help Delta to create jobs, diversify its economy away from oil and explore the potential of producing and exporting green hydrogen, a fuel produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity.”
The keynote address and official opening of the event were given by Engr. Blessing Ogaga Edewor, the Permanent Secretary of Delta State Ministry of Power and Energy, who stated the willingness of the Delta State Government to work with Clean Technology Hub to adopt the roadmap. Stating that, “The launch of the policy roadmap would serve as a blueprint to achieve the state government’s vision for universal access to electricity, climate change resilience and economic growth beyond oil in the state.” Additional opening remarks were given by Chief Godspower Ashiwu, Commissioner, Delta State Ministry of Environment; Chief Barr. Emmanuel O. Uti, Co-Chairman, Delta State Open Government Partnerships, and several other key dignitaries were present.
A presentation on the Delta State Renewable Energy Roadmap in detail was given by Mr Abel Gaiya, Deputy Manager of Research at Clean Technology Hub while Mr David Otu, Technical Assistant, New Media, Rural Electrification Agency (REA) gave a presentation on the activities and programmes of the Agency. Following the presentations was a panel discussion focused on the topic “The Role of State Governments in Driving Nigeria’s Energy Transition”. The panelists included Engr. Blessing Ogaga Edewor, the Permanent Secretary, Delta State Ministry of Power and Energy, Dr (Mrs.) Minnie Oseji, the Permanent Secretary, Delta State Ministry of Environment, Representatives from the Delta State Ministry of Transportation, and Science and Technology, and Chief Barr. Emmanuel Uti, Co-Chairman Delta State Open Government Partnership (OGP). This discussion was moderated by Ms Ifeoma Malo, Co-Founder/CEO, Clean Technology Hub. Wrapping up the event, Ms Ifeoma Malo, handed over Delta State Renewable Energy Roadmap document to the state government through the Permanent Secretary of Power and Energy, Engr. Blessing Ogaga Edewor.
